Jameis Winston Video Manages to Unearth Some Old Demons
In this, our new, hypersensitive society, I find myself annoyed daily with sentiments regarding the importance of preserving the delicate feelings of others. As a chubby kid, I dealt with my fair share of schoolyard bullying and embarrassment, and I'm sure that if an adult had stepped in more often to help protect my feelings, it would have felt nice. Would I be as strong a person as I've grown up to be though? Not likely.
Today, when I first watched a video of Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston being unwittingly misogynistic, however, I found an instance of sensitivity that I can actually get behind. In the video, Winston tells all the boys at the school he is visiting to stand up and announce their abilities to capture their dreams proudly. Before he does this, however, he casually asks the girls to sit and reminds them that society expects them to be quiet, polite, and reserved.
These ignorant comments are magnified by a substantial margin, not just because he is a public figure, but because he is not exactly the poster boy for gentlemanly behavior toward women.
Winston was accused of sexual assault during his college days, and was also suspended for half of a game at FSU for standing on a table at the student union and shouting "F*ck her right in the p***y!" in reference to a popular Internet meme. While the latter can be chalked up as a youthful transgression, and the sexual assault allegations were found insubstantial, it is not a good look for the young quarterback.
Let's hope Winston can choose his words and actions more carefully in the future, and in the meantime, let's watch this video of one particular women simultaneously proving her strength and achieving her dream.
